TORONTO, April 20, 2016 /CNW/ - The Royal Canadian Mint is joining Canadians in celebrating the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the launch of a colourful silver collector coin combining royal and Canadian imagery. This coin was unveiled today by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada and Royal Canadian Mint President and CEO Sandra Hanington before an assembly of the Monarchist League of Canada.
"The Mint has a long and proud history of commemorating significant Royal Family milestones and the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II figures prominently among our coins celebrating Canada's royal traditions," said Ms. Hanington. "Today, the Mint is proud to issue a special collector coin to wish a happy 90th birthday to the Queen."
This $20 fine silver coin was designed by Canadian artist Tony Bianco. It features selective colour which highlights the Royal Cypher (EIIR), St. Edward's Crown, and a flowing illustration of the blue Garter Sash surrounded by a cluster of engraved maple leaves. An innovative glittering effect also adds a realistic sparkle to an engraving of Her Majesty's diamond-encrusted maple leaf brooch. Limited to a mintage of 7,000, the coin retails for $99.95.
While quantities last, the $20 fine silver coin is available at the Royal Canadian Mint's boutiques in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver, as well as through the Mint's global network of dealers and distributors, including participating Canada Post outlets.
A $3 fine silver coin, featuring two Queen Elizabeth roses selectively plated in pink gold, can also be ordered from the Mint as of today. Designed by Canadian artist Claudio D'Angelo, it retails for $44.95 and has a mintage of 10,000.
Earlier this month, the Mint released a $250 pure gold coin adorned with a large emerald and 29 Canadian diamonds as a very exclusive keepsake of Her Majesty's 90th birthday. Retailing for $6,999.95 and limited to a small mintage of 125, this coin has since sold out.
