Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust improves patient consultations and bedside care with OpenText
OpenText provides enterprise information management to help front line staff access care notes, reduce costs and deliver paper-light NHS digital health agenda
READING, England, March 11, 2014 /CNW/ - OpenText™ (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), the global leader in Enterprise Information Management (EIM), announced today that it has been selected by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust to manage its scanned legacy case-notes.
OpenText's Content Suite, the core and foundation Suite for OpenText EIM, is designed to help healthcare providers maximise the value of the information they hold and minimise risk associated with information management.
Set against the backdrop of the Department of Health's NHS Digital Health Strategy to make the NHS paperless by 2018, OpenText's Content Suite will be utilised to store, manage and make available digitised copies of the Royal Free's paper care records. The system will be integrated with the trust's Cerner Electronic Patient Records (EPR) system, and will ensure that clinicians have access to a comprehensive view of a patient's condition and treatment at the point of care. It is scheduled to be deployed hospital-wide this summer.
"Accurate and timely patient data is at the heart of delivering quality care and through our collaboration with OpenText we will ensure that it will be available to all front line care staff where and when it is required," said Will Smart, the director of information management & technology at the Royal Free.
As Smart explains further, "For a complex hospital environment like ours, managing patient care using paper case-notes has been logistically very challenging. Tracking and moving paper case notes across a large physical estate has made it difficult to ensure that these are available where and when they are needed and has required a large administrative team. By digitising these case-notes we have the opportunity to improve the quality of the services we provide whilst reducing costs. We also believe that OpenText's Content Suite will provide the platform to enable us to digitise other paper-based corporate records and drive further efficiencies."
OpenText's Content Suite will help to secure and manage all patient information and records including images and unstructured data across the trust.
Benefits of OpenText Content Suite:
- Captures, processes, distributes, secures, manages and archives clinical and non-clinical content
- Streamlines patient record access, reduces processing errors and enables compliance throughout the lifecycle of the patient record
Through OpenText, the Royal Free will be able to:
- Enhance patient care: Helps doctors to make more informed decisions based on a complete picture of the patient
- Respond quickly and accurately: Never again will clinicians have to wait for paper files to be pulled
- Reduce operating costs and spend less time on compliance: eliminate paper records, including the cost of storing and maintaining them
Mark Bridger, the regional VP of UK, OpenText, said, "Keeping medical records accurate and immediately accessible will go a long way in improving patient care, help clinical staff do their jobs more efficiently and have the confidence to embrace digital opportunities as recommended in the NHS Digital Health Strategy. Because the Royal Free operates within such a complicated compliancy framework too, it means that delivering a set of Enterprise Content Management technologies that ticks all of the boxes is even more pivotal."
The Royal Free employs over 5,000 staff. The IT team numbers 180 and provides IM&T services to the trust as well as to Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust. The Royal Free medical records library manages 700,000 patient case notes.
