Sachs Harbour residents to benefit from more efficient energy through new, improved power plant Français
INUVIK, NT, March 4, 2019 /CNW/ - Investing in local green infrastructure projects that support energy security, help the economy grow and improve the quality of life for those living and working in the North.
Today, Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for Northwest Territories, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and Robert C. McLeod, Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation on behalf of the Honourable Wally Schumann, Northwest Territories Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, announced the construction of a new diesel power plant in Sachs Harbour.
The construction of a new plant ensures that local residents and businesses have a reliable source of energy. The plant will also be able to adapt to impacts of climate change while updating several operational elements such as electrical equipment, heating systems and indoor fuel storage tanks. The new facility's design will allow for the addition of a wind turbine in the future, which is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the region. This new reliable energy source will generate enough power to meet the needs of residents in the community for years to come.
The Government of Canada is contributing up to $7.4 million, with the Government of the Northwest Territories contributing up to $2.4 million. The project is being funded through the Government of Canada's new Arctic Energy Fund, which supports energy security in Northern communities.
