ST-CROIX, Quebec, April 12, 2017 /CNW/ -- Bibby-Ste-Croix, a Canadian-based company that manufactures cast iron pipe and fittings for the plumbing industry, has officially notified building officials and the general public about a potentially dangerous product that is being installed in buildings.
Ipex, the manufacturer of System XFR® PVC DWV piping system claims to have a ULC S102-2-10 listing for their System XFR® plastic piping in compliance with requisite safety standards. However, two independent test reports by prominent third-party testing facilities have confirmed that Ipex System XFR product DID NOT pass the ULC S102.2-10 standard. Test reports proved the Smoke Developed Value (SDV) of each System XFR specimen was greater than the accepted limit per Article 3.1.5.19 of the 2015 National Building Code of Canada which sets the maximum allowable SDV at 50. One of the test results showed the SDV of System XFR® fittings at 325 – 6.5 times the allowable limit and SDV of System XFR® pipe at 365 – 7 times the allowable limit.
A burning structure containing System XFR® PVC DWV could potentially result in lethal consequences for building occupants and first responders. Nevertheless, Ipex System XFR® piping systems are being installed across Canada in fire-rated buildings and in plenum spaces.
If you are an authority that has jurisdiction where this product is being used, it is strongly suggested that you make a formal request to Ipex for them to provide the full and complete copy of the testing conducted with results and details of the testing methodology employed under the latest testing procedures (test specimens as per section 6.1.1 and A1.22.2) of the ULC S102-10 standard. If Ipex refuses to provide the entire test report, and you suspect this product listing is not in accordance with the standard, then it's within your authority to notify the Standard Council of Canada (SCC) and report this to Chantal Guay, Vice President at Standards Council of Canada, Email: [email protected]
Hazard: In a building fire, this product can result in lethal consequences for building occupants and first responders.
