SAINTE-MARTHE, QC, Nov. 29, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Les Serres Nouvelles Cultures, which markets its products under the Sagami and Biologico trademarks, recently added to its properties - a production site in Saguenay and another in Sainte-Sophie, in the Laurentians - with the recent acquisition of 2.1 hectares of greenhouses located in Sainte-Marthe, near Valleyfield. Following the sale last spring of its Mirabel facilities, Serres du St-Laurent (Savoura) has in fact turned the Sainte-Marthe location, a production site for ordinary tomatoes, over to Serres Nouvelles Cultures, which will shortly complete the conversion to a facility for growing organic tomatoes that will be sold under the Biologico brand in Quebec, Ontario and the United States.
This major investment, announced by Stéphane Roy, President of Serres Nouvelles Cultures, became necessary in order to react as needed to North American market realities for organic products. Stéphane Roy asserted that this switch to organic production, which he launched in early 2011, positions the company better than ever in terms of strategic development for this product category. The acquisition of these Sainte-Marthe facilities makes Serres Nouvelles Cultures the largest North American producer of organic greenhouse tomatoes grown under artificial lighting. The company is thus able to supply, on a year-round basis, most Canadian and American distributors focused on organic products intended for consumers who care about the quality and origin of the foods they buy.
About Serres Nouvelles Cultures
For almost 20 years, Les Serres Nouvelles Cultures has been marketing a number of tomato varieties under the Sagami brand name, for the Quebec and Canadian markets. In the spring of 2011, the company added four varieties of organic tomatoes, marketed under the Biologico brand name, to its list of products. The Sainte-Sophie greenhouses were, at the same time, equipped with a biomass heating system, which enabled a drop in GHGs of more than 7,500 tons annually. Use of hot water from the ELKEM MÉTAL plant located nearby has made the Saguenay site a model of energy efficiency. The addition of the Sainte-Marthe acreage provides Serres Nouvelles Cultures with almost 7 hectares of land in various Quebec locations.
