SAINT-LAURENT, QC, June 4, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Mr. Norbert Morin, Member of the National Assembly for Côte-du-Sud and Deputy Government Whip, presented the 2018 Prix du Mérite municipal (municipal merit award) in the Citizen category to Saint-Laurent resident Corey Fleischer on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Québec City. The Prix du Mérite municipal is annually awarded to individuals, organizations and municipalities whose initiatives, vitality and commitment to their community have significantly contributed toward improving the quality of life of residents in their community.
For over 8 years now, Mr. Fleischer has volunteered to remove hate graffiti from the streets of Montréal. He founded the #erasinghate movement, which has spread worldwide through social media and has attracted some 100 volunteers. The movement has already made it possible to remove 5,000 to 10,000 hate graffiti tags. Mr. Fleischer now visits Montréal schools to raise youngsters' awareness of the acceptance of others.
In warmly congratulating the 36-year-old award winner, Saint-Laurent Mayor Alan DeSousa stated: "The impact of his actions is undeniable and goes far beyond Saint-Laurent's borders, with nearly 15,200 followers on Instagram and 9,200 on Facebook. In this way, he is truly making the Borough shine all over the world. We are very proud of Mr. Fleischer; he is a real source of inspiration for all Saint-Laurent residents, and especially for young people."
Francesco Miele, City Councillor for the Côte-de-Liesse district, attended the ceremony held at Le Parlementaire restaurant in the Parliament Building in Québec City. Saint-Laurent's Administration nominated Corey Fleischer for the Mérite municipal after having honoured him with the Ordre des Grands Laurentiens award in the Citizen category last May.
