On The Big Screen
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will always have a place in Toronto's heart; it's the city where much of their courtship took place. Now, as she prepares for her real life wedding, Meghan might be thinking back to her acting days and a dream wedding scene with a Fairmont connection. Rachel Zane, her character in the television show Suits, had her heart set on The Plaza, a Fairmont Managed Hotel in New York for a perfect wedding. The scene was filmed at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto as a stand-in for The Plaza itself. Toronto has played host to the royal couple on several occasions, most notably during the 2017 Invictus Games where they made their first official public appearance together.
Several Canadian properties including Fairmont Royal York, Fairmont Le Château Montebello, Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu and Fairmont Palliser will celebrate the Royal Wedding on the Big Screen and offer guests a chance to share in the moment with luxury screening events held inside the hotels. All the way across the Pacific, Fairmont Jakarta is planning a week-long wedding celebration starting May 14th with a signature afternoon tea menu, flower arrangement workshops, fashion shows and a live streaming viewing party on the Big Day!
The Plaza, A Fairmont Managed Hotel is taking the Royal celebrations to a new level. The Palm Court will be live streaming the wedding while guests enjoy a "royal" breakfast including a flowing mimosa and Bellini bar. A panel of experts on wedding planning, etiquette and the English royal family will commentate, providing the play-by-play for every happening in St George's Chapel.
Royal Introductions
British Royalty has a long history with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts; a history at the core of Fairmont's identity, reflecting the high standards of service and luxury in which Fairmont takes pride. In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother officially opened the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and toured several properties including the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Fairmont Banff Springs and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip followed in their footsteps 66 years later, when they stayed at Jasper's famed Outlook Cabin in 2005.
Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa's very own fairytale palace, has also played host to many royal figures including the late Princess Diana. Fittingly known as Canada's Castle in the Rockies, the Fairmont Banff Springs has hosted no less than six royal visits throughout the twentieth century, with an opulent Royal Suite designed for royalty, dignitaries and extra special occasions. This unforgettable suite features a reception foyer, spacious living room, grand piano and upper perimeter library. Located within the castle's peak, the Royal Suite offers magnificent panoramic views. Fairmont Empress in Victoria, British Columbia has been a popular choice for Queen Elizabeth II, who has visited nearly every decade since being on the throne.
A Royal celebration would not be complete without Afternoon Tea and Fairmont Banff Springs has created a signature Royal Wedding Tea menu served on weekends for the month of May. In Barcelona, Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I (named after the former King of Spain) is also celebrating with a month-long Royal Tea throughout May complete with two glasses of Veuve Clicquot Rose and a mini wedding cake in honor of Prince Harry & Meghan. Fairmont Singapore will be hosting an exclusive daily Royal Afternoon Tea beginning May 14th at the famed Anti:dote Lounge presented in a beautiful white leather jewellery chest, with a choice of a royal inspired cocktail – Queen's Cup, Catherine and the Meghan.
British Traditions
The Savoy, a Fairmont Managed Hotel in London has hosted just about every member of the British Royal Family for dinners, events and celebrations since 1895, when their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, received two invitations to two luncheons at The Savoy on the same day. During a wedding reception at The Savoy in 1946, a young Princess Elizabeth was first spotted in public with her future husband, Prince Philip of Greece. Meanwhile, over in Scotland, it was at Fairmont St Andrews where Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, famously caught Prince William's eye during a 2001 fashion show.
The Savoy is launching a Royal Afternoon Tea, beginning May 1st, along with 'The Royal Welcome' a signature cocktail to mark this occasion, available at the hotel's award-winning American Bar. The Royal Welcome features a light and aromatic blend of Italicus Rosolio di bergamotto, Bombay Sapphire gin, Champagne syrup, yuzu, peychauds bitters and English sparkling wine. Fairmont St Andrews promises a day to remember with a royal afternoon tea and a live screening of the wedding in the Atrium Lounge. The centerpiece of the lounge will feature an oversized wedding cake flavored with Lemon Elderflower, the same as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Guests will be able to take a slice away with them in a branded box and their menu as a memento. Fairmont Empress will be hosting an exclusive tea throughout May featuring Meghan Markle's favorite tea, a special blend of licorice and green tea, as well signature cocktails in the Q Bar paying homage to the royal couple.
Since opening its doors in 1907, Fairmont San Francisco has carried on a storied tradition of receiving royalty from around the world. In celebration of the royal wedding, the hotel is offering guests an exclusive Prince & Princess Penthouse Package, featuring a luxurious one-night stay in the opulent 6,000 square foot Penthouse suite. The hotel has even partnered with sister property, The Savoy, to provide its esteemed butler service straight from London and much more.
Hollywood and Famous Romances
From the days of the silent screen, Fairmont has been at the heart of great Hollywood romances, hosting Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard in 1936 at the Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai and Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Marilyn Monroe and her beau, Joe DiMaggio, spent many magical moments together at the Fairmont Banff Springs.
The Plaza, A Fairmont Managed Hotel in New York has been the site of hundreds of high-profile and high society weddings, including the nuptials of Hollywood royalty Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones who were married in a union that has lasted for 18 years. America's "royal family", the Kennedy's, often made Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston their home away from home, hosting numerous society affairs and political fundraisers there. The hotel also shares a romantic past with Hollywood royalty Elizabeth Taylor, who spent her second honeymoon with Richard Burton at Fairmont Copley Plaza.
Fairmont Copley Plaza will be hosting a Royal Wedding Viewing Party & Breakfast on May 19th where guests are encouraged to dress in their royal best and have an opportunity to win a stay at sister property, The Savoy. Fairmont Washington D.C., Georgetown has created a two-night Royal Wedding Guest Package, including round trip airfare from anywhere in The United States for two guests and two canine companions, with accommodation in the hotel's Royal Suite with a personal chef and an invitation to the exclusive Royal Garden Party. For those looking to host their very own Royal Wedding, Fairmont Peace Hotel has created an exceptional Royal Wedding Package, complete with two nights in the Sassoon Presidential Suite, private set dinner and afternoon tea in the suite, spa treatments, royal attire, styling services and much more!
