The vine stays on for freshness. The taste stays in for sweetness.
MONTREAL, Dec. 4, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Another flavoursome, fresh, taste-treat has joined the ranks of delicious Savoura products: the Grape tomato. With its elongated shape, lovely bright colour, crunchy texture, fresh taste and unusually sweet flavour, the Grape is the perfect snack food to replace candies.
The Grape tomato is the answer to what we've all been looking for - a healthy nibble that's ideal for the pace and demands of modern life. It's so easy to drop into a lunch bag, bite into at snack time, transform a salad with, or use as an hors d'oeuvre. Its sweet juiciness belies its nutritional power: low in calories, rich in antioxidants and full of vitamin C. Also, unlike other grape-tomatoes on the market, the Grape comes with the vine, meaning it stays fresher longer. And of course, being a Savoura tomato, it's fresher anyway, because Savoura tomatoes are picked daily and shipped to stores immediately!
"Because we want to grow only tomatoes with a distinctive, flavoursome taste, we're always investing time and money in research, both on production methods and varieties. Our latest product, the Grape, is the perfect addition to our product line with its fresh, super-sweet taste," explains Marie Gosselin, PDG of Savoura. But the Grape is not the only new product the company has recently launched. Much to its customers' delight, the company recently developed a small but very practical package, called the Savoura Ready-To-Eat Lunch, containing 80 g of prewashed Savoura Cherry Tomatoes that can be eaten upon opening. In all, the Savoura Collection now features a wide variety of tasty, nutritious treats, including a Beef tomato, Tomatoes on the Vine, Cocktail Tomatoes on the Vine, Red and Yellow Cherries, the Ready-To-Eat Lunch, and a harmony of colours and flavours: the Bouquet. "In fact," continues Marie Gosselin, "we like to think we have a tomato for every taste."
A tomato that's at home in a salty meal... and makes a dynamite dessert!
Tomatoes, an inevitable ingredient of Québec cuisine, have been eaten for centuries. But they can still surprise us. We are, of course, all familiar with their usage in savoury and salty dishes with fresh herbs, such as soups, sauces, casseroles, omelettes and fresh salads; but what a surprise to find out it's the perfect dessert!
It's been a while since we got used to carrot cake, rhubarb pie and sweet zucchini breads. But the tomato as a dessert? In a word: yes. For instance, the well-known chef and author of several recipe books, Louis-François Marcotte, recently created a sweet and sour pannacotta with fresh herbs and marinated cherry tomatoes - while the Ritz-Carlton's Chef Christian Lévesque has developed a spicy tomato and coconut marshmallow, and perfected an absinthe granité with grape-tomatoes and a creamy red cherry-tomato sauce. With these delicious recipes as a starting point, who knows how long it will take for the tomato to become the next dessert trend?
The Grape: a local, environmentally respectful product
Like all Savoura products, the Grape tomato comes from the company's Québec greenhouses, where energy efficiency and environmental respect are the bywords. For example, hungry insects that enjoy greenhouse tomatoes as much as the outdoor variety are discouraged using only organic methods, and without insecticides or herbicides. Yet, none of Savoura's products - including the Grape - are genetically modified. Instead, Savoura tomatoes are left to ripen on the vine and are delivered the same-day to stores.
About Savoura
Savoura is known for "doing the ripe things the right way." Since 1989, when the company set up its greenhouses in Québec's bucolic Portneuf region, Quebeckers have been able to enjoy tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes… all year long. The 300 staff members who contribute to the quality and reputation of the locally owned company are justifiably proud that consumers can eat a Savoura tomato within 48 hours of it having been picked, thanks to the company's efficient delivery system and proximity to market. With its 7 varieties, there's a Savoura tomato for every taste and every dish; and with the company's insistence on quality, consumers can enjoy summer on their plate all year round.
