RBC and Student Life Network contest helps students say
'Thank You Mom and Dad' with a chance to win $20,000
TORONTO, April 4, 2016 /CNW/ - From books and supplies, to newfound independence, juggling a new school and more, being a student brings responsibilities that can be very stressful. There's a learning curve when it comes to the education journey that goes beyond the classroom, and luckily for many students they aren't in this alone. In fact, 75 per cent of students say their parents are financially contributing to their education in some way, and 58 per cent say they have provided them with emotional or other support to prepare them for this next phase.
But sometimes it's hard to find the right words to express just how important that support is. That's why RBC is once again joining forces with the Student Life Network (SLN) to launch the Thank You Mom and Dad contest. Now in its second year, students from across Canada are invited to share their stories and thank their parents, grandparents, and mentors for their support. One winner will be selected at random to win the $20,000 prize to be used to thank and recognize the most supportive people in their lives.
"How do you sum up the impact of all of the support you've been given throughout your schooling? We want to help students find the right way to say thank you and express how grateful they are to their supporters" said Amber Pearson, senior manager, Education Financing, RBC. "It can never be said too often and we can't wait to hear the inspirational thank yous from students across Canada."
Last year over 50,000 entries were received and Taylor Losak, a Queens University student, took home the grand prize: "My parents were shocked when I presented them with the cheque. They were also extremely generous – they gave me back the prize money to put towards my university tuition," said Taylor. "The Thank You Mom and Dad contest is a great platform for students to say thank you to their supporters in a big way. If you're a student, take advantage of this opportunity and take the time to say thanks to those who matter most."
How to share your story
Students can create their own Thank You page and thank anyone by explaining what the support has meant to them – through words, videos, photos and social media. Each student can enter once, but can earn extra entries by following @RBC_Canada on Twitter, Tweeting about the contest, and more. The contest runs until June 30, 2016. For full contest rules and how to enter, visit the Thank You Mom and Dad homepage.
"This is more than just a thank you. This is the chance to craft a heartfelt note to the ones that have had the biggest impact on your life. It's appreciation, understanding and gratitude all rolled into one," said Ryan Bolton, communications director, Student Life Network.
