SC Johnson Working with Nature Conservancy of Canada, Demonstrating Commitment to People and Planet

Company support for initiatives across the province focus on making life better for Canadians

BRANTFORD, ON, May 13, 2014 /CNW/ - SC Johnson Canada has announced a $300,000 donation to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) over the next three years. SC Johnson is working with the NCC to help protect Ontario's natural habitat and ensure that families will be able to enjoy Ontario's environment for generations to come through essential conservation efforts. The Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ontario Region and SC Johnson hosted a community event at Evergreen Brick Works this past Saturday, May 10^th to celebrate the new initiative.

"We believe that by making this important contribution to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ontario Region, we'll be able to preserve the country's diverse habitat and encourage others to help so that future generations can enjoy the natural environment."

The donation is part of the Leaders in Conservation program that provides the NCC with funding to ensure the financial stability to undertake new projects and develop new approaches to conservation. By investing in conservation, SC Johnson is helping to ensure that these natural areas remain a home for wildlife and continue to clean the air we breathe.

The Ontario Region has conserved more than 178,000 acres (72,000 hectares) since 1962," said James Duncan, Regional Vice-President, Ontario Region. The new relationship with NCC is a part of SC Johnson's commitment to making life better and to the communities in which it operates. Globally each year SC Johnson designates a percentage of profit to support social, health, cultural, environmental and educational organizations and programs. Over the past 10 years alone SC Johnson's contributions worldwide have exceeded $210 million. Some of the company's recent Canadian contributions include:

Protecting the Environment

• The Bruce Trail: To continue preserving Ontario's natural habitat and encourage families to enjoy the outdoors, SC Johnson has renewed its support of the Bruce Trail with a $30,000 donation to secure and steward the winding Bruce Trail through the Greenridge Property near Stoney Creek. The property encompasses 1.5 acres of prime Niagara Escarpment land and is a designated part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. SC Johnson has long been helping the Conservancy to preserve its land, with a $10,000 donation towards the Speyside Sanctuary in 2009 and $25,000 towards the Malcom Bluff Shores in 2010.

Supporting Mental Health

• St. Joseph's Hospital Mental Health and Wellness Resource Centre: Approximately 20 per cent of Ontarians will experience mental illness, while 80 per cent of Ontarians will be directly affected by a mental illness of a family member, a friend or a colleague. Each day, 500 000 Canadians will miss work due to a mental health related illness. Having the appropriate resources available to individuals is the first step in breaking the stigma against mental illness and getting better. SC Johnson is pleased to announce a $250 000 donation to fully fund the new SC Johnson Mental Health and Wellness Resource Centre at St Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton,. The Resource Centre provides easily accessible, user friendly information on mental illness and treatments, and other resources to clients, family members and visitors.

Supporting Education

• Kids Can Fly: SC Johnson Canada is working with organization Kids Can Fly to ensure all babies born in Brantford and Brant County in 2014 will be able to register for Books from Birth, a new initiative from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. SC Johnson provided an initial donation of  $40,000 and a $20 000 commitment in year two to  provide an opportunity for children to receive quality, age appropriate books in the mail once a month for free, from birth to age five and receive a library of 60 books when they reach their 5^th birthday. The program is an important local initiative that supports early-childhood development.
