OTTAWA, Feb. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is pleased to announce that both ASTM International and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) have been accredited by SCC to develop National Standards of Canada.
"The expansion of SCC's standards development program to include ASTM International and UL is of great benefit to Canadians," says SCC's Chief Executive Officer, John Walter. "With additional SCC-accredited standards development organizations operating in Canada, SCC is able to offer more standardization solutions to better serve the needs of Canadian government, industry and consumers."
ASTM International and UL have met SCC's rigorous program requirements for the accreditation of standards development organizations (SDOs). Both organizations currently have standards referenced in Canadian federal regulations. Accreditation by SCC will improve the relevance and value of standards in the Canadian system. Additionally, expansion of SDOs in Canada presents greater flexibility and increased opportunities to solve regulatory issues, harmonize standards and improve trade.
United States-based ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is globally recognized for the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. Approximately 1,400 Canadians currently participate on ASTM's technical committees.
Offering expertise in safety solutions, UL is actively involved in international standardization with both the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and has over 140 Canadians participating on 300 international technical committees.
SCC is a Crown corporation and a portfolio of Industry Canada. With the goal of enhancing Canada's economic competitiveness and social well-being, SCC offers accreditation services to standards development bodies, and coordinates the efforts of Canadians in the development and use of national and international standards. SCC is the Canadian member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and sponsor of the Canadian national committee to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
