OTTAWA, Oct. 3, 2013 /CNW/ - The 2013 Engineers Canada scholarship recipients are complementing their technical skills with business and leadership skills, and developing tools and technologies that will result in positive contributions to areas such as Canadian infrastructure and the environment.
The annual scholarships are provided through the generous support of Manulife Financial and TD Insurance Meloche Monnex. They reward outstanding engineers who demonstrate great potential as they build on their engineering background by pursuing advanced degrees.
"These talented young engineers are contributing to our country's health and prosperity by working on important social, economic and environmental issues," said Engineers Canada President W. James Beckett, FEC, P.Eng. "Their studies will provide essential information for decision-makers to make informed choices on issues affecting the lives of Canadians."

The six 2013 scholarship recipients are working on a range of projects:
Engineers Canada-Manulife Financial Scholarships ($12,500):
- Mathew T. Langford, M.Eng., P.Eng., (APEGA) is pursuing a doctorate in Civil Engineering (Water Resources Engineering) at the University of Alberta. He is researching how fish upstream of hydropower generation facilities are affected by dam hydraulics.
- Catherine Tatarniuk, P.Eng., (APEGS) is pursuing a doctorate in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Engineering) at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. She is researching how to stabilise landslides in clay soil using deep soil mixing technology.
- Ron Thiessen, P.Eng., (APEGA) is pursuing a doctorate in Civil Engineering (Environmental Engineering) at the University of Calgary. He is developing a tool decision-makers can use to make informed choices about cleaning up contaminated sites.
Engineers Canada-TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Scholarships ($7,500):
- Dooseon (James) Park, P.Eng., (APEGA) is pursuing a Master's in Business Administration at the University of Calgary. He is rounding out his technical experience with business and leadership skills.
- Garrett Schmidt, P.Eng., (APEGS) is pursuing a Master's in Business Administration at the University of Saskatchewan. He will enhance his understanding of management systems in order to design more effective infrastructure systems.
- Bénédicte Thérien, ing., (OIQ), is pursuing a doctorate in Applied Human Sciences at l'Université de Montréal. She is taking a multidisciplinary approach to understanding how to influence and encourage people to embrace behaviours beneficial to the environment.
