School of Alberta Ballet introduces a Specialized Boys Program
CALGARY, March 16, 2012 /CNW/ - The School of Alberta Ballet is offering a free "Introduction to Ballet" program this Spring for boys aged 8 - 11. The program is specially designed for boys who are interested in dance, and who want to increase their balance, agility, and flexibility. The Spring program will encourage many boys to try ballet with the hope that these boys will attend the Fall term program. The program will run on Saturdays from April 14th to May 26th. Classes will be held at the School of Ballet studios in the centre of Calgary.
Ballet is a physical activity that helps to increase speed, agility, and flexibility. The increase in flexibility and agility reduces the likelihood of injury while participating in other physical activities. There is a long list of high profile male and female athletes who use ballet to increase flexibility and agility. NFL players Lynn Swann, Willi Gault, Welsh national rugby player Shane Williams, and the South African national soccer team have all learned ballet.
Students from across Canada and around the world come to the School of Alberta Ballet for the chance to study under top ballet teachers. Murray Kilgour, Principal of the School, is a former principal dancer and soloist in the Royal Ballet in London. He's also a former teacher with the Royal Ballet School in London, whose students include the determined Yorkshire boy who inspired the film Billy Elliot. Nancy Kilgour, the School's Senior Pedagogue, performed with and taught at The National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Ballet in London. Ms. Kilgour's former students include Karen Kain, Veronica Tennant and Darcey Bussell. Other faculty members have trained and taught internationally and performed with prestigious ballet companies all over the world. "Our instructors are some of the best in the world and any boy with an interest in dance will only flourish under their tutelage and support," says Murray Kilgour, Principal.
