TORONTO, Nov. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - The 23rd annual SOCAN Awards Gala, the music industry's most important celebration of Canadian songwriting achievement, will be hosted by Seamus O'Regan of CTV National News, at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall on November 19th.
Staged by SOCAN - the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada - the SOCAN Awards Gala recognizes the accomplishments of Canadian songwriters by honouring their songs and compositions that have achieved success in the categories of Pop/Rock, Dance, Urban, Country, Jazz, Folk/Roots, Classical, and Film & Television. Songs that have hit the 100,000 airplay mark on domestic radio are presented a Classic Award.
"I'm thrilled to be hosting the 2012 SOCAN Awards," said Seamus O'Regan. "It's a great honour to be able to recognize the contributions of Canadian songwriters, composers and music publishers and acknowledge their extraordinary career achievements."
Additionally, songwriters who have achieved a great deal of success over the course of their careers are awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award, National Achievement Award, and International Achievement Award.
Canada boasts some of the world's most talented and successful songwriters, and the evening is a Who's Who of the Canadian music industry with performances by several prominent artists, promising to be entertaining for all those who are gathering to pay tribute to their friends and colleagues.
"The SOCAN Awards is all about paying tribute to Canadian songwriters, all of whom have touched our lives through their music," said Eric Baptiste, CEO of SOCAN. "It's the biggest night of the year when we celebrate their success as songwriters and recognize them and their publishers for the gifts they've given Canada and the world - the songs and compositions we all love. There's no better way to enjoy an evening."
A recent research study conducted by Leger Marketing on behalf of SOCAN revealed that a majority of Canadians would prefer to have dinner or a drink with a famous Canadian musician than they would a famous athlete, author or politician.
