Sears Canada Advised of a Potential Safety Hazard Relating to Certain
Maytag(R), Amana(R) and Performa by Maytag(R) Dishwashers
TORONTO, June 4 /CNW/ - Sears Canada has been advised by Maytag Corporation of a potential safety hazard relating to certain dishwashers sold under the brand names Maytag(R) , Amana(R) and Performa by Maytag(R). It has been discovered that an electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element can pose a fire hazard.
Some of the dishwashers were sold through Sears Canada retail stores, online at www.sears.ca, and through the Sears Canada catalogue between February 2006 and April 2010. The affected model numbers and corresponding Sears item numbers are as follows:

Neither Health Canada nor Sears Canada has received reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of this product.
Customers with the affected dishwashers will have the option of either scheduling a free in-home repair with Sears Canada or receiving a rebate from Maytag towards the purchase of a new model:
(1) Sears Canada will be contacting potentially affected customers to
arrange for a free repair of their dishwasher. Sears customers who
have not been in contact with Sears are asked to call our 24- hour
line at 1-866-691-9948 to schedule an in-home repair.
(2) Alternatively, if customers wish to participate in the rebate program
they can contact Maytag at 1-800-544-5513 or visit the company's
website at www.repair.maytag.com to receive a rebate by mail
following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand stainless-steel
tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 for the purchase of a new
dishwasher model MDB 7609 or $250 for the purchase of new dishwasher
models MDB 8959 or MDB 7809.
In the interest of consumer safety, Sears Canada urges customers who own an affected dishwasher to cease use immediately and remove the fuse, or shut off the circuit breaker, for the dishwasher to disconnect it from its electrical supply. Sears Canada will be posting signs in all of its retail stores to advise customers of this safety hazard. Sears Canada is bringing this matter to the public's attention in the interest of consumer safety and apologizes to its customers for any inconvenience.
