Second Harvest partners with Loblaws® Inc. to feed those in need over the holidays
TORONTO, Dec. 5, 2013 /CNW/ - While you're doing your grocery shopping this weekend, watch for volunteers dressed as turkeys in the frozen meat department of select Loblaws® stores. Second Harvest's 11th annual Turkey Drive, in partnership with Loblaw, kicks off Saturday, December 7th.
Shoppers can select and donate a turkey that volunteers will load into the Second Harvest refrigerated truck on-site. That turkey will then be delivered to Torontonians in need through food banks and meal programs this holiday season.
"When I hear the expression 'think global, act local', I think of the six million people living in the GTA and the thousands among them who are lacking the means to feed themselves and their families," said Debra Lawson, executive director of Second Harvest. "This is a time for us to rally around our neighbours in need and ensure that they receive the nutritious holiday meal we all look forward to every year. We're confident our turkey track record will continue and that Loblaws® shoppers will help us reach our goal of 5,250 turkeys so we can act local and feed our fellow Torontonians."
"Each year, we look forward to partnering with Second Harvest during this important event," says Derrick Pittman, VP Loblaws®. "In addition to our Extra Helping® food drive, the turkey drive allows us another great opportunity to help put food on the tables of those in our community who need our help the most this holiday season."
For every turkey donated, Loblaw® Inc. will donate $2, up to a maximum of $10,000 in funds to Second Harvest.
