Union reiterates demand for stronger measures to support frontline healthcare workers and patients
RICHMOND HILL, ON, April 16, 2020 /CNW/ - SEIU Healthcare, the union that represents over 60,000 frontline healthcare workers in Ontario, mourns the loss of our dear member of 31 years, due to COVID-19 and extend our deepest sympathies to her family, as well as her union sisters and brothers who work at Sienna Altamont Care Community in Scarborough.
SEIU Healthcare is reaching out to the member's family to offer whatever support is needed at this difficult time.
STATEMENT FROM SEIU HEALTHCARE PRESIDENT, SHARLEEN STEWART:
The tragic death of our union sister is a reminder of the very real dangers that frontline healthcare workers face in the selfless delivery of care for Ontario families. We have heard from her colleagues who described her as a gentle, caring, and dedicated personal support worker. She will be missed and remembered.
More measures are required to support frontline healthcare workers. I am requesting an immediate discussion with Premier Ford, Minister Elliott, Minister Fullerton, and Chief Medical Officer Williams, to review what actions the provincial government is prepared to take to support frontline healthcare workers as they fight for all of us against the COVID-19 pandemic.
SEIU Healthcare represents more than 60,000 healthcare and community service workers across Ontario. The union's members work in hospitals, homecare, nursing and retirement homes, and community services throughout the province. www.seiuhealthcare.ca
