LAVAL, QC, March 11, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Over 200 people – politicians, residents and families – gathered together in a warm and friendly atmosphere to celebrate an extremely rare event: Sélection Retraite's Waldorf retirement home will have 20 one-hundred-year-old residents living there in 2018. Among its network of over 40 complexes, Sélection Retraite currently has some 60 hundred-year-olds among its residents.
"It is fairly rare to have 20 individuals one hundred years old or more under one roof. At Sélection Retraite, we are honoured to be able to care for these folks who embody part of our collective history. This significant event will provide an opportunity to say 'Thank you' to them", said Réal Bouclin, Sélection Retraite's Founding President and CEO.
Emily Clyke, sister of Viola Desmond
Among these hundred-year-olds is Emily Clyke (née Davis) who will blow out her 105th birthday candle in June. She is one of the survivors of the explosion that devastated Halifax on December 6, 1917 – killing 2,000 and injuring 9,000 – Canada's most deadly accident. In spite of that, she led a peaceful life surrounded by a family that is so important to her. In addition, one of her sisters is Viola Desmond (née Davis), who will appear on the 10 dollar bill in November, 2018.
This story is only the tip of the iceberg, though, since these 20 hundred-year-olds have accumulated more than 2,000 years of history between them.

Happiness index
Since 2016, Sélection Retraite has been measuring its residents' level of contentment. This 'Happiness index' is calculated based on the Satisfaction with life scale (SWLS) methodology developed by American psychologist Ed Diener, in 1984.
The latest annual survey of Sélection Retraite residents conducted in November, 2017, revealed an increase of four satisfaction level points among the Waldorf residents, rising from 27 to 31 out of a possible 35, indicating 'very satisfied' to 'extremely satisfied'. The average for the Sélection Retraite Group as a whole also rose from 27 to 28 points out of 35 (very satisfied).
"The numbers speak for themselves. When our residents evaluate their life, they feel extremely satisfied. Our complex contributes to continuing this positive experience and our healthyID® approach no doubt has something to do with this. This isn't me saying this, it is the residents themselves. At the last annual survey, the overall satisfaction rate was around 95%" according to Michael Goldwax, General Manager of the Waldorf Sélection Retraite complex.
The Satisfaction with life scale consists of five statements measuring general satisfaction that the individual can rate with regard to his or her own life. The five statements* are added and evaluated on a scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree).
*Here are the five Satisfaction with life scale statements:
- My life generally corresponds closely to my ideals
- My living conditions are excellent
- I am satisfied with my life
- Until now, I have achieved the important things I wanted out of life
- If I could start over, I would change almost nothing
