TORONTO, Nov. 3, 2015 /CNW/ - This month, Shaw Media recognizes Remembrance Day with a full, three days of powerful, commemorative programming. HISTORY®'s entire schedule from Monday, November 9th through Wednesday, November 11th will be completely dedicated to remembering and honouring those that served their country, with a particular focus on those who served Canada in the past and present. On November 11th beginning at 10:30am ET/7:30am PT Global News will broadcast a live, commercial-free, hour-long Canada Remembers special. Shaw Media will also hold a moment of silence on November 11th at 11am ET across its Specialty channels in honour of Canadian veterans.
"Shaw Media has a proud history of honouring Canadians for the wars and conflict in which they have served," says Christine Shipton, Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Shaw Media. "Our programming is an important reminder that the peace and freedom we enjoy every day as Canadians is ultimately because of the sacrifices our veterans made."
Headlining HISTORY's Days of Remembrance programming is the fourth season of the award-winning documentary series War Story: Afghanistan premiering on Monday, November 9th with back-to-back episodes beginning at 8pm ET/5pm PT. The six-part series shares the moving, personal stories of soldiers in Canada's longest conflict, the War in Afghanistan. Through intimate, first-person accounts from generals, front-line soldiers, and Afghan interpreters, War Story: Afghanistan takes the first comprehensive look back at the Canadian experience of this major recent event and showcases the heroism and courage in the long, difficult war. The vivid interviews and incredible, high definition footage expose sniping behind enemy lines, friendly fire, suicide bombers and NATO's largest ever battle against a determined and brutal enemy.
Documentary series War Junk returns for an adventure-filled third season on Sunday, November 8th at 10pm ET/PT, uncovering what's left behind on legendary battlefields. The four-part series follows the journey of military historian David O'Keefe and history buff and filmmaker Wayne Abbott to some of the world's most iconic battlefields including Juno Beach, Vimy Ridge, Monte Cassino and the battlefields of Northern Holland, which Canadians helped liberate in the spring of 1945. O'Keefe and Abbott explore, investigate, and solve lingering mysteries while telling the stories of these battles by the large and small 'war junk' left behind.
Global News honours the men and women who have served to protect this country with its annual Canada Remembers coverage special. This hour-long, commercial-free coverage will begin Wednesday, November 11th at 10:30am ET/7:30am PT and will be led by Global National Anchor & Executive Editor Dawna Friesen. Global News' Chief Political Correspondent Tom Clark will report live from the National War Memorial ceremony in Ottawa to give viewers a first-hand look at the events happening to commemorate soldiers and veterans. Globalnews.ca will live-stream the Canada Remembers special and host special Remembrance Day coverage and feature stories.
In addition to the new programming, HISTORY will also air encore presentations of Canadian originals: D-Day to Victory; Dig WW2; Air Aces; Camp X: Secret Agent School; The Great Escape: Secrets Revealed; Storming Juno; Dieppe Uncovered; 28 Heroes and many more.
