TORONTO, Oct. 23, 2012 /CNW/ - This November, Shaw Media remembers the service and sacrifice of Canadian veterans with an extensive schedule of Canadian original programming. From live coverage of 2012 Remembrance Day events, to a documentary series in which veterans share personal war stories, Shaw Media's Days of Remembrance provides viewers with an unrivaled set of programming that pays tribute to those who have bravely volunteered in military conflicts around the world.
Airing Thursday, November 8 through Sunday, November 11, HISTORY's Days of Remembrance offers the highly anticipated broadcast premieres of War Story and The Real Inglorious Bastards. The schedule includes exclusively Canadian-produced movies, specials and series such as Dieppe Uncovered, The Great Escape: Secrets Revealed, D-Day to Victory, Dig WW2, War Junk, Passchendaele, and Vimy Ridge: From Heaven to Hell.
"From moving personal accounts of the lasting effects of war, to groundbreaking documentaries changing the way we view our history, Shaw Media's Days of Remembrance programming is unparalleled in its diversity and quality. We are proud of our tradition of collaborating with the country's top storytellers to create enriching content that pays tribute to our country's past," said Barbara Williams, Senior Vice President, Content, Shaw Media
Global News pays tribute to the men and women who have served to protect our country with its hour-long Canada Remembers coverage special. Airing commercial-free on Sunday, November 11 at 10:30am ET/7:30am PT and helmed by Global National Anchor & Executive Editor Dawna Friesen, Canada Remembers will feature live coverage of the ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Global News' Chief Political Correspondent Tom Clark will be live, on-the-ground to offer a first-hand perspective of events taking place throughout the morning while military historian and Curator of the Canadian War Museum Dean Oliver will also be on-hand to lend his expertise. GlobalNews.ca will live-stream the Canada Remembers special, and host exclusive Remembrance Day coverage and feature stories.
"Canada Remembers looks to honour those brave Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who continue to serve in harm's way, by telling their stories in the most poignant and compelling way possible," says Troy Reeb, Senior Vice President, News and Station Operations. "Dawna and Tom's combined reporting experience will continue Global News' tradition of providing Canadians with award-winning Remembrance Day coverage that pays tribute to those who fought for our country."
The highlight of HISTORY's schedule is the broadcast premiere of the emotional Canadian original series War Story. Through interviews with Canadian war veterans, War Story goes beyond the details of engagement, providing a moving look at what it is like for the men and women who cross oceans and face death on foreign battlefields. War Story airs Thursday, November 8 through Sunday, November 11 with back-to-back new episodes at 8pm each night. New episodes will also air at 10:30pm on Saturday, November 10 and Sunday, November 11.
On Thursday, November 8 at 9pm, the broadcast premiere of the Canadian original The Real Inglorious Bastards recounts one of the most successful operations from the Office of Strategic Services' (OSS) during World War II. Three OSS agents, two young Jewish immigrants, one from Germany, the other from Holland, and a former Austrian Wehrmacht officer make a night jump into the Austrian Alps, in the dead of winter, landing hip-deep in snow at 10,000 feet. Thanks to this intrepid threesome, rail and road communications between the Italian front and Germany were seriously hampered and the city of Innsbruck, in the heart of the Nazi's vaunted stronghold the National Redoubt, fell to American troops without a shot being fired.
In support of its on-air content, HISTORY's online contribution to the Days of Remembrance includes a new and interactive companion micro-site. Launching Thursday, November 1, the site houses show pages for highlighted Remembrance specials, providing users with tune-in information, synopses and photo galleries from each series. The site also features full length episodes of the channel's programs and exclusive behind-the-scenes interview clips that expand on HISTORY's on-air programming.
In addition to HISTORY's Days of Remembrance microsite, the War Story website serves as a companion to the television series. The site features firsthand accounts from veterans on their experiences at war, and users can delve deeper into these stories by exploring personal archival images and veteran biographies. The site also allows users the opportunity to focus on the subjects that appeal to them the most through organizing stories by themed topics of interest, such as battle location, weaponry and wartime experience.
