Joint venture further demonstrates the success of Ontario's green energy economy
OAKVILLE, ON, May 5, 2014 /CNW/ - Siemens Canada announced that it will supply, install and commission one of the largest Canadian wind turbine orders from Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. (Samsung), Capital Power, and Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern Development). The SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines for the K2 Wind project (K2 Wind) will be located in Goderich in southwestern Ontario. Along with the South Kent Wind project in Chatham-Kent, this 270-megawatt (MW) project will be the largest wind farm in Ontario, generating clean power for approximately 100,000 Ontario homes.
More than 1,000 workers from across Ontario will be involved in the manufacturing and installation of the K2 Wind project, as well as site construction and operations. Once operational, the project is anticipated to create up to 24 permanent full-time positions, generating $1.5 million of employment income annually.
Construction of the project is now underway with commercial operation expected by spring 2015. All 420 49-meter blades will be manufactured at the Siemens blade facility in Tillsonburg, Ontario, and 140 towers for the project will be manufactured locally at CS Wind's facility in Windsor using Ontario-made steel. The deal includes a three-year service and maintenance agreement.
As Canada faces increasing environmental and economic challenges, Siemens is making great strides toward a sustainable energy future by providing efficient, affordable and clean power. This joint venture between Samsung, Capital Power, and Pattern Development further demonstrates the progress of the Green Energy Investment Agreement between Samsung and the Ontario Government. It also underscores the success of the Green Energy Act as part of the Province's commitment to economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Siemens' wind turbine Service and Maintenance Distribution Centre in Chatham, Ontario, will support this project. The centre stores commonly used wind turbine parts and serves as a training centre to develop and advance technical and safety skills for the firm's wind technicians.
The Canadian wind energy market is growing at a rapid rate and Canada is now the ninth largest producer of wind energy in the world with current installed capacity at roughly 7,800 MW.¹ Siemens Canada is contributing to this growth and holds a leading position in the Ontario market with over 1 GW of installed capacity.
K2 Wind is a strong supporter of the local community. The project has created a Community Benefits Fund Agreement with the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh to deliver approximately $15 million in funding for community initiatives over the next 20 years. Additionally, K2 Wind will provide financial benefits to 90 local farm families, who will collectively receive more than $3.2 million in annual revenue through land lease agreements and other benefits.
