SIR Royalty Income Fund announces SIR Corp. fiscal 2010 third quarter results
BURLINGTON, ON, June 23 /CNW/ - SIR Royalty Income Fund (TSX: SRV.UN) ("the Fund") today announced that SIR Corp. ("SIR"), the operating entity from which the Fund derives distribution income and interest income, has filed its financial results for the 12-week and 36-week periods ended May 9, 2010 (the "third quarter" and "YTD" respectively).
SIR has advised the Fund that revenue for the quarter increased 4.7% to $47.1 million compared to $45.0 million for the same period a year ago. For the YTD, revenue increased 1.9% to $137.9 million compared to $135.3 million for the same period a year ago.
Same store sales(1) ("SSS") increased by 4.6% for the quarter compared to the comparable period a year ago. SSS growth(1) ("SSSG") for Jack Astor's, SIR's flagship Concept Restaurant brand, which generated approximately 68% of YTD Pooled Revenue, was 4.8% and 1.8% during the quarter and YTD, respectively. The following chart shows the SSS(1) for each of the restaurant concepts and for the Signature Restaurants:
------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-week period ended 36-week period ended May 9, 2010 May 9, 2010 SSS(1) (unaudited) (unaudited) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jack Astor's 4.8% 1.8% ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canyon Creek 0.6% (2.7%) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alice Fazooli's 5.8% 1.1% ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Signature Restaurants 8.4% (1.1%) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall SSS(1) 4.6% 0.8% -------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association is projecting a modest increase in sales, during the 2010 calendar year.
SIR reported net earnings from operations of $0.5 million in the quarter compared to $0.4 million for the comparable period in fiscal 2009. YTD net earnings of $0.3 million compare to a net loss of $1.6 million for the same period in fiscal 2009. Improved net earnings in fiscal 2010 were primarily attributable to:
- An increase in food and beverage revenue of 1.9%; - A decrease in restaurant costs as a percentage of sales of 0.8%; - Recovery of impairment of loans and advances of $0.3 million and $0.5 million for the quarter and YTD respectively; - Increase in other income of $0.2 million and $0.3 million for the quarter and YTD respectively; - $0.1 million YTD unrealized foreign exchange gain compared to an unrealized foreign exchange loss of $0.2 million in the prior year; and - The prior year had $0.2 million in restructuring costs that were not repeated in fiscal 2010.
SIR Corporate Development
As previously announced, SIR has secured one new site for a Jack Astor's restaurant in Boisbriand, Quebec with an expected opening date later in calendar year 2010 and two new sites, at one location, at the corner of Yonge and Gerrard Streets in Toronto, Ontario, with expected opening dates in calendar year 2011. The development of the first of these three sites is expected to resume in quarter four of fiscal 2010. In addition, SIR completed a renovation of the Jack Astor's in Brampton, Ontario subsequent to Q3 of fiscal 2010. Management continues to monitor economic conditions and consumer confidence. Based on its assessment of these conditions, the timing of restaurant construction and opening schedules will be reviewed regularly by Management and adjusted as necessary.
SIR currently has 45 restaurants open in Canada, all but two of which have either been newly constructed or renovated within the past six years. Management is committed to maximizing the performance of all of its restaurants and providing guests with exciting and memorable dining experiences backed by excellence in service, quality, and innovative menu choices. The goal is to provide investors with stable and growing sales and earnings over the longer term.
Liquidity and Capital Resources
As at May 9, 2010, SIR had cash and cash equivalents of $6.9 million compared to $4.9 million as at May 10, 2009.
Cash provided by operations totaled $1.6 million in the quarter compared to $3.4 million for same quarter last year. SIR used cash in investing activities of $0.3 million and $1.0 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2010 and fiscal 2009, respectively. The cash used in investing activities in fiscal 2010 was lower than that in 2009 as a result of SIR's previous decision to slow its new restaurant development plans.
While the economy is showing some early signs of improvement, Management remains cautious with regard to growth and conservation of cash. SIR believes that the economic conditions may continue to impact its sales and profit prospects in the near future, particularly in the higher cheque average Signature restaurants and Canyon Creek.

(1) Same store sales and same store sales growth exclude revenue from restaurants which are not included in the Royalty pool, and exclude revenue from restaurants opened or closed during the current or prior fiscal year and therefore not open for the full period in both years. Same store sales growth is the percentage increase in SSS over the prior comparable period. SSS and SSSG are non-GAAP measures that do not have standardized meanings prescribed by GAAP. However, SIR believes that SSS and SSSG are useful measures and provide investors with an indication of the change in year-over-year sales. SIR's method of calculating SSS and SSSG may differ from those of other issuers and, accordingly, SSS and SSSG may not be comparable to measures used by other issuers.
