SIU Continuing to Investigate Toronto Firearm Death

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Dec. 28 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding a police shooting on Sunday December 27, 2009 involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).

At this time the SIU has designated 4 subject officers, and has interviewed two witness officers and 3 civilian witnesses. The deceased is a 34-year-old Montreal area man.

The SIU was notified that on the evening of December 27, 2009 at approximately 7:30pm officers were called to investigate a person with a firearm in a parking lot at 1901 Eglinton Avenue East in Scarborough. During this investigation officers discharged their firearms and the male was struck at least once. The male was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
