SIU Investigates Motor Vehicle Collision in Scarborough

TORONTO , Nov. 16 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision that occurred in Scarborough on late Saturday night.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) reported to the SIU that at approximately 11:46 PM on Saturday, November 14th 2009 , police officers were attempting to investigate a suspicious vehicle at 90 Mornelle Court. As the officers approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated and fled the scene. Police pursued the vehicle, which became involved in a collision at Military Trail, near Bobmar Road in Scarborough. The 32 year old male driver of the vehicle was taken to Scarborough Centenary Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Four investigators and three forensic investigators from the SIU are probing the circumstances surrounding this incident. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
