SIU Investigates Motor Vehicle Death in Chatham

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 28 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has assigned four investigators and four forensic investigators to probe a vehicle fatality in Chatham that occurred this morning.

This morning, the SIU was notified by the Chatham-Kent Police Service of a motor vehicle fatality. The SIU was informed that at approximately 11:00 a.m. on January 28, 2010 , police became aware of a pickup truck being driven erratically westbound on Grande River Line Road, just west of Bear Line Road. Officers followed the vehicle. A short time later, the pickup truck left the road and struck two trees.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
