LAVAL, QC, July 5, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Smog Alert of the Société de transport de Laval (STL) was set in motion on July 2, for a three day period. The operation went very well. The STL's special $1 fare helped attract more than 15 489 additional trips on its buses, up over 9,91 % compared to the results recorded at the same time last year. Nearly
47 338 riders took advantage of the special $1 fare during this day.
As it may be recalled, this special reduced fare is offered the day after a smog warning issued by Environment Canada.
Pleased with the results of this experience, the STL expects that the number of riders who will take advantage of the discount will considerably increase if there are more Alerts this summer.
In fact, this measure (which comes to an end on Labour Day) may well be repeated in the next few weeks.
No other Québec carrier has adopted such an incentive fare policy on smog days to improve the quality of the air.
