MONTREAL, Nov. 9, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - SNC-Lavalin (TSX: SNC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract by Yara International ASA (Yara), through its subsidiary Yara Dallol BV, for a greenfield potash mining and processing facility located in the Dallol region of northeastern Ethiopia.
SNC-Lavalin will provide the front-end engineering design, followed by EPCM services and assistance with the start-up and commissioning of the new facility.
The facility will incorporate solution mining as the method of extracting the deposit, followed by mineral recovery in a process plant to be designed for the production of 600,000 metric tonnes per annum of sulfate of potash. The projected life-of-mine is more than 20 years, with additional resources identified in the eastern portion of the deposit area.
The engineering and procurement services for the project will be completed out of SNC-Lavalin's Montreal offices, with resources being mobilized to the project site for the construction phase, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2018.
"We are proud to have been selected by Yara to bring our proven expertise in potash project development to this exceptional project in Ethiopia," said José J. Suárez, President, Mining & Metallurgy, SNC-Lavalin. "In providing our services to Yara, we look forward to jointly delivering a project that will set new benchmarks in technical excellence, project delivery assurance, safety, ethics and quality, while bringing new opportunities to the local community. This award is testament to our capabilities in successful project execution in remote areas with challenging climates and logistics."
