BURLINGTON, ON, Dec. 6, 2018 /CNW/ - Anna-Karina Tabuñar, Director, Corporate Affairs, Sodexo Canada, was recently recognized with the Community Leader Award at the annual Celebration of People Gala in Ottawa.
Celebration of People is an annual awards gala held in the nation's capital to honour the contributions of individuals, businesses and organizations working toward the inclusion of citizens with disabilities. The annual event takes place around December 3, designated by the United Nations as International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
"We're honoured to recognize Anna-Karina's work to encourage the employment of people with disabilities," says Martha Marr, Steering Committee Chair for Celebration of People. "Through her documentary film Talent Untapped and advocacy work, Anna-Karina shifts perceptions of people with disabilities. Her body of work as a filmmaker, broadcaster and advocate shows us that capabilities and talent come in all forms."
The Community Leader Award in Memory of Cathy Kerr recognizes a person with a disability who is an example of exceptional citizenship, as demonstrated by their record of wide-reaching leadership and involvement in the community.
"I'm deeply grateful to receive this award and be part of this remarkable community," says Tabuñar. "Working for Sodexo, where diversity and inclusion is part of our mission, I'm privileged to continue my advocacy and promote the value of diverse teams in my daily work."
Award recipients were nominated by community members and voted on by a Selection Committee that considers:
- Perseverance in pursuit of community service in the face of obstacles and/or challenges
- the degree to which the individual's activities enhance lives and/or strengthen the community
