MONTREAL, Feb. 17, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Philanthropist Sophie Desmarais received the Medal of Honour from the National Assembly of Quebec at the benefit concert for the Fondation Jasmin Roy, an organisation for which she acts as sponsor of honour.
It was on behalf of the President of the National Assembly and MNA of Westmount─Saint-Louis, Mr. Jacques Chagnon, that Ms. Stacy Maignan, political aide to the MNA, presented Ms. Desmarais with the Medal of Honour, in recognition of her social involvement and commitment to the cause of bullying.
On this occasion, the minister responsible for Seniors and the Fight against Bullying, Ms. Francine Charbonneau, emphasized that because of her extraordinary philanthropic involvement, Mme Desmarais is without a doubt a major source of inspiration for all Quebecers.
« I am very touched by this honour. I believe that social commitment goes well beyond financial contribution. So when I decided to get involved, I used any means possible to ensure that the cause is known to everyone and especially, that children would benefit from the good deeds of the foundation, » said Mme Desmarais at the reception held in her honour.
Founder of the Sophie Desmarais Fund for the University of Montreal's Big Band, in addition, for the last three years she has also served as co-honorary vice-president of the annual cocktail dinner for The Lighthouse Children and Families.
$130,000 for the fight against bullying
Montreal's Theatre Corona hosted the benefit-concert for the Fondation Jasmin Roy last night. The event, which welcomed Corsican musician Jean-Pierre Marcellesi, raised $130,000 for this cause, whose mission is to raise awareness and fight against bullying, violence and discrimination of children in primary and secondary-level schools.
