QUÉBEC, April 19, 2013 /CNW/ - Environment Canada's Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area announces the resumption of public services and the reopening of the Interpretation Centre. Every day, from April 20 to October 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the public is invited to discover, learn about and protect nature at this exceptional site. Activities led by passionate naturalists are also offered on the themes of migratory birds, species at risk, wetlands, and biodiversity.
Already very present in the area, thousands of Greater Snow Geese and 158 other species of migratory birds returning from their wintering areas have flocked to the wildlife reserve in search of food. This protected area is a prime location for observing them and for learning more about these species. Hikers may also wish to spend time exploring the 20 km of trails that run along a variety of natural settings.
There are two activities to watch for this spring: On May 11, the National Wildlife Area will participate in the 8th edition of 24 heures de science, the Quebec science and technology event. For the occasion, in addition to two other activities, Focus on the Geese and the BioKit's Wonders of Cap Tourmente circuit, the GeoTour will be offered free of charge to mark International Migratory Bird Day. On May 25, two special activities, the Wonders of Cap Tourmente circuit and A pilgrim coming from afar will be organized as part of the Get to Know BioBlitz program.
The Government of Canada has committed to the long-term conservation of biodiversity and is working with partners to protect and conserve species at risk and their habitats in Canada. The Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area, located 45 minutes from downtown city of Québec, is part of a network of 146 protected areas aimed at conserving important habitats for wildlife species, some of which are species at risk.
Admission is $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Admission is free for children under the age of 12 accompanied by a parent. Telescopes are available on weekends, and a binocular rental service is offered on-site to enhance observations. Additional information on activities and services is available by phone, at 418-827-4591, or by email, at [email protected].
