at the Montréal Science Centre
March 3 to 11, 2012
MONTREAL, Feb. 1, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Montréal Science Centre's activities are intriguing, entertaining and always surprising - it's a chance to explore, learn about and understand the world around us and have as much fun as possible at the same time. The Centre is the perfect place for the whole family during March Break, what with dinosaurs, the incredible undersea world of coral reefs and a host of new technologies. There's something for all tastes and all ages.
Visit the Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibition and come face-to-face with dinosaurs like you've never seen them before. Step back in time for a life-size prehistoric adventure, starring the world's most realistic animatronic dinosaur replicas! Don't miss them - the show will be closing on March 11!
The IMAX®TELUS Theatre has something new: The Last Reef 3D will take you beneath the ocean's surface to explore the fascinating and little-known world of coral reefs. Discover a complex and wondrous environment, threatened but essential.
And to have a blast learning about all the latest technology, TECHNOFOLLIES is the coolest March Break event: 9 days of techno marvels. Technophiles of all ages are invited to enjoy workshops, shows, challenges and entertainers, a line-up of fun and original events calling for both physical and mental skills. It's a concept that thrilled over 55,000 visitors to the first three editions.
"Today's young generation grew up with the Internet; new technologies are an inescapable part of their lives. They're part of the Generation C era: they communicate, create content, collaborate, join communities and consume differently. TECHNOFOLLIES, designed for ages 8 to 14 and their parents, is an exciting voyage into this digital universe, and a chance to discover the day-to-day applications of new technologies," says Carol Pauzé, Director, Programming at the Montréal Science Centre.
The many activities on offer during TECHNOFOLLIES will give everyone a chance to demystify digital technologies, learn new things, discover some unsuspected applications, create music - and things! - and explore the risks out there in the digital world and the hazards of multitasking. The event also encourages us to use our judgment, inviting us to reflect on the psychological, social and environmental impact of how we use these new technologies.
TWO NEW ATTRACTIONS THIS YEAR
- The Great Race
It's the top challenge for this edition of TECHNOFOLLIES. Several times a day, four families will face off in a thrilling competition that calls on muscle power as well as grey cells! Some members of the team will have to answer a techno-crazy quiz, while others will take off to meet some challenges in the fascinating Science 26 permanent exhibition. It all adds up to 30 minutes of laughter and brainstorming, and a race against the clock. Nothing will stop the competitors in this 21st-century pursuit!
- Organic Orchestra
In this music creation workshop, visitors will use techno modules created exclusively for TECHNOFOLLIES to play with sound and come up with their own cool creations. They can e-mail their compositions to themselves and then share them over the Web.
The Organic Orchestra consists of three tables: the rhythm section is a sequencer, where you drop different coloured balls into holes in the table to create different rhythms. The bass table consists of a glass surface covered with sand. Draw on it to play different bass lines. And the note feel table is a virtual keyboard: wave your hands over the surface and sensors will capture the motion to create a unique melody!
SOME PERENNIAL FAVOURITES

- An intergenerational techno-rally
So you think you know all about technology and electronic devices? Are you sure? Here's your chance to find out. Players of all ages pick one of the five themes (music, TV-video, telecommunications, photography and video games) and use a smart phone to unlock the QR codes and figure out the clues provided by electronic devices of all kinds, from the latest technogadgets to real dinosaurs like Walkmans from the 70s and 80s. Your grandmother or your little brother might know the answers if you don't!
- Laser Wall
Laser pointers can become digital paintbrushes! Create works of art with this light-paint.
- Game for Science?
Four Internet terminals give players a chance to discover Game for Science?, all kinds of free online games that revolve around science and technology. This fun, interactive website was chosen by the Le Code Chastenay TV show as one of its favourite science games.
