Elevating the Retail Experience through Art and Culture
MISSISSAUGA, ON, March 5, 2015 /CNW/ - Today, Oxford Properties proudly unveiled Lambent, a striking public art installation suspended in Square One Shopping Centre's Food Central, the centre's fully renovated and expanded upscale food court. Created by award winning artists Daniel Young and Christian Giroux, Lambent affirms Oxford Properties' commitment to supporting public art, local talent and providing an elevated shopping experience.
"We are excited to officially unveil Lambent, suspended above Food Central, as part of our ongoing commitment to offering customers an unparalleled shopping experience and a premium destination for fashion, art and culture in the western Greater Toronto Area," said Greg Taylor, general manager, Square One, Oxford Properties Group. "We are proud to house such a dramatic and uniquely Canadian piece of art, as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting local talent and the Mississauga arts community."
Oxford Properties commissioned Canadian artists Young & Giroux, who have exhibited extensively across Canada and around the world. Their largest and most ambitious work to date, the 40 foot tall installation reimagines a common domestic chandelier executed at an industrial scale in stainless steel. Its perforated skin reveals thousands of LED lights that illuminate the artwork internally. A series of randomized programs will give the artwork a unique identity as it comes to life in the evening hours.
"The work comes out of the limits that the architectural envelope imposes on us. The dome calls out for a grand embellishment but we wanted it to reflect the postmodern sensibilities of the time in which the dome was added (1986), taking a common, domestic light fixture and rendering it spectacular through scale and surface treatment," said artists Daniel Young and Christian Giroux.
Lambent by the Numbers
In an ongoing redevelopment process, the opening of Square One's renovated North side wing in September 2014 marked an expansion of the retail space by 78,000 square feet for a total of 1.8 million square feet, and an investment of $144 million. The addition of a luxe wing and La Maison Simons and Holt Renfrew openings in spring 2016 will complete the final $500 million development.
