PwC kicks -off National Philanthropy Day with new CR publication

TORONTO, Nov. 14, 2012 /CNW/ - In celebration of the 26th annual National Philanthropy Day, PwC is proud to launch the 2012 Corporate Responsibility (CR) publication and share the inspiring story about Jaclyn Demianyk - PwC's 2012 National Volunteer of the Year.

New to this year's CR publication, is the focus on being 'part of it' - the belief that each staff member plays a central a role in being part of the global conversation about responsible business practices.

"We're encouraging our employees to be part of the solution to social issues by becoming catalysts for change," says James Temple, Director of Corporate Responsibility at PwC. "This change involves using our skills, voices, and relationships to work with others and influence activities that make a measurable difference."

Demonstrating this proactive approach is Jaclyn Demianyk, PwC's 2012 Volunteer of the Year recipient. As a child of deaf adults, Jaclyn grew up within the deaf community and has volunteered hundreds of hours with Camp Kakepitay - a camp built by, and providing programs for, deaf children. She now serves as Treasurer on the Board of Directors, and illustrates for others how they can use their professional and leadership capabilities to augment their social impacts.

Employees stand up and share their thoughts 

Jaclyn Demianyk's story is only the beginning. Eighty -three per cent of PwC employees are satisfied with the actions the firm is taking to be socially responsible through community organizations, events, volunteering and charities.

"Creating tangible social impacts are part of our overall CR objectives at PwC," says Temple. Some of the accomplishments and impacts attained in 2012 include:

• PwC sent 25 not-for-profit leaders to 11 professional development conferences and events. In total, more than 200 people were impacted by training and development programs initiated by PwC grantees.
• More than 96% of PwC grantees agreed or strongly agreed that the firm grants helped them advance their organizational and leadership goals.
• One grantee told PwC the new skills they acquired helped them re-develop their business plan, saving the organization an estimated $20,000 in operating costs year over year - money that can now be used for important social programs.
• Similar to the PwC Tower located in downtown Toronto, PwC's new Oakville office is targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification in 2013.
• PwC established a Diversity and Inclusion Council consisting of senior leaders reflecting the diversity of employees.
• PwC created Upfront, a multi-channel program bringing leading executives together to discus trends impacting Canadian business.
