Standard & Poor's Global Group Ratings Methodology Impacts Genworth MI Canada Inc. Following Downgrade of Genworth Financial Group
TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2014 /CNW/ - Genworth MI Canada Inc. (the "Company") (TSX: MIC) notes that Standard & Poor's Ratings Services ("S&P") has revised its rating on Genworth Financial Group following the recent release of the Genworth Financial, Inc. third quarter earnings.
As a result of this downgrade and S&P's group rating methodology, S&P has also lowered its financial strength rating on Genworth Financial Mortgage Insurance Company Canada ("Genworth Canada") from AA- to A+ and its credit rating of the Company from A- to BBB+.
S&P's press release issued November 6, 2014 explains the rationale for these changes as follows:
"The ratings on the insulated Canadian businesses are capped at three notches above the group credit profile under our group ratings methodology, and accordingly moved in step with the rating on Genworth Financial [Group]. The Canadian mortgage insurance businesses continue to have a very strong capital and earnings profile ...We expect the Canadian operating company to maintain regulatory capital of more than 220% of the minimum capital test ratio."
In addition to the rating change, S&P also revised its outlook as follows:
"The negative outlook for Genworth MI Canada Inc. and its subsidiary reflects our outlook on Genworth Financial. We expect Genworth Canada to sustain its current market shares and good operating performance."
The Company is also rated by DBRS Ratings Limited ("DBRS"). The DBRS issuer credit rating on the Company is 'AA' (low) and its financial strength rating on Genworth Canada is 'AA'.
The Company continues to maintain a strong stable balance sheet. As at September 30, 2014, the Company had $5.9 billion total assets and $3.3 billion total shareholders' equity, with third quarter Net Operating Income of $93 million.
The full ratings are available from each respective agency.
