Statement - Canada's Minister of Veterans Affairs Marks 99th Anniversary of the Beginning of the Gallipoli Campaign

ROME, Italy, April 25, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Julian Fantino, Canada's Minister of Veterans Affairs, today made the following statement after participating in a joint Australian and New Zealand ceremony at the Rome War Cemetery to commemorate the Gallipoli Campaign.

"April 25, 2014, marks the 99^th anniversary of the beginning of the Gallipoli Campaign, an important First World War battle in which many Newfoundlanders saw action.

"The Newfoundland Regiment known today as the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, was the only North American unit to fight alongside the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during the Gallipoli Campaign. The Newfoundland Regiment's service was marked by the great bravery of its soldiers who played an important role in covering the safe withdrawal of Allied forces from this conflict zone.

"The courage displayed by the Australian and New Zealand soldiers 99 years ago drew the attention and respect of many nations, and the Newfoundlanders who later fought alongside them in the campaign were proud to have served with these heroes. For that reason, we came from around the world to gather today at the Rome War Cemetery and remember those who served and, most importantly, those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending peace and freedom.

"The Government of Canada is proud of these courageous soldiers for their actions in the Gallipoli Campaign and throughout the First World War. Their exceptional sacrifices and service will always be part of our collective memory."
