OTTAWA, Nov. 17, 2017 /CNW/ - Statement by Louise Bradley, President and CEO, Mental Health Commission of Canada:
"On November 18, on Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, we stand together in conviction that the losses we have endured by suicide shall not be in vain.
Twenty-five years ago my closest friend died by suicide. I will always carry with me the deep sense of grief that comes with such a loss. However, slowly I learned to channel my emotions into advocacy.
I gained strength from sharing my story with others, and was inspired by the courage and compassion of families who have experienced similar devastation.
Talking about suicide is an important life line for those who are vulnerable to suicide, and to the families who are grappling with unanswerable questions.
Those of us who have lost loved ones to suicide share an unfathomable bond. But everyone has an opportunity to strengthen our collective safety net. From schools and workplaces, to first responders and physicians, we must do all we can to ensure fewer families mark this day.
If you or someone you know is a survivor of suicide loss, know that you are not alone and that there are resources for survivors of suicide loss to help you cope.
I also encourage all Canadians to spread messages of hope and resilience to those who may be vulnerable to suicide through the MHCC's #sharehope campaign."
