OTTAWA, Sept. 2, 2016 /CNW/ - The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement to mark Merchant Navy Veterans Day, September 3.
"We remember Veterans of the Merchant Navy who served Canada throughout the years. Members of the Merchant Navy carried equipment, fuel, goods and personnel overseas during the First and Second World Wars, as well as in the Korean War. They endured significant enemy action, adverse weather as well as unpredictable ocean conditions.
"Thousands of men and women served on board those ships, and the more than 2,100 who lost their lives are commemorated individually in the Merchant Navy Book of Remembrance.
"We remember their accomplishments and sacrifices, as well as the pride with which they represented our great country. Their service allowed Canada's soldiers, sailors and airmen to succeed, ensuring victory for our forces."
