BERLIN, Germany, May 16, 2013 /CNW/ - Canada's Environment Minister, the Honourable Peter Kent, today issued a statement following his visit to four European cities this week: London, Paris, Brussels and Berlin.
"I had many positive discussions with my European colleagues about the environment and the challenges and opportunities associated with its stewardship. Every country has its own physical, social and economic circumstances, making it all the more important for us to exchange knowledge, best practices, expertise and experience.
"Canada is an Arctic nation and about 40 percent of our land mass and freshwater is located in a northern environment vulnerable to climate change. Our government is conscious of these challenges and continues working towards achieving our commitments under the Copenhagen Accord to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020. We are also engaged in negotiating and implementing a single new international treaty that includes all major emitters.
"At home, Canada's ambitious regulatory agenda is focused on the establishment and enforcement of world-class environmental standards. It is estimated that Canada is halfway to meeting our target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, standards for chemical management, air and water quality, and biodiversity are reinforced continually through investment in the research and development necessary to turn intent into action.
"Technology and innovation play a critical role in an environmental plan. Canada is working with business and international partners to encourage the development of innovative environmental technologies and sustainable solutions. Since 2006, Canada has invested more than any other previous government in reducing greenhouse gases, improving energy efficiency and developing green infrastructure.
"Canada continues to pursue innovative solutions that provide environmental and economic benefits for all Canadians. We look forward to continuing to work with our international partners to share knowledge and advance our shared goals."
