OTTAWA, July 10, 2015 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, commended the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on the laying of terrorism charges against Othman Ayed Hamdan. He was charged under section 83.2 of the Criminal Code.
"It is clear that the terrorism threat is real. The international jihadist movement has declared war on Canada. That is why our Government passed the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015, which enhances the ability of our police officers to detain suspected terrorists before they can harm Canadians. We will continue to ensure that our police forces have the tools they need to protect Canadians against this evolving threat of terrorism.
I would like to thank the RCMP for their thorough investigation that resulted in the arrest of Othman Ayed Hamdan. The RCMP works closely with domestic and international law enforcement partners in the global fight against terrorism."
