OTTAWA, June 6, 2017 /CNW/ - It is my pleasure to be here today on behalf of the over 85,000 physician-members of the Canadian Medical Association and over 50,000 public supporters of our Demand a Plan campaign.
Physicians and patients from coast to coast to coast are united in their belief that Canada needs a national seniors' strategy now! We are very pleased to know that belief is shared by the Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, and Minister Duclos who is responsible for seniors.
Mr. Serré's work to bring forward a motion to create a national strategy to improve the quality of life and strengthen access to care for seniors is vital to our future. There is a demographic shift in our country and our health care system must evolve if it is to meet the needs of our aging population.
Canadians are living longer, healthier lives than ever before and that is a clear marker of success for our nation. We should be celebrating this fact, but as we do so we must not overlook the fact that our system needs urgent attention. But what does that look like?
It means ensuring the Canadian senior who is caring for her spouse who is also a senior, but with more health issues, doesn't have to worry about who will care for him if she gets ill.
It means the Ontario retiree caring for her 91-year-old mother doesn't feel that she is on her own in providing the care her mother needs.
It means building a health care system that provides timely access to high-quality care for all Canadians.
The way forward is clear. Canada's doctors, and the Canadians for whom we care, are pleased that today marks the beginning of a national senior's strategy. We look forward to the HUMA committee's report and recommendations and hope the federal government will include these into its plans for the future.
