Today we celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Day!
OTTAWA, June 27, 2017 /CNW/ - Canadian culture is as multi-faceted as our country and the people who inhabit it. The great diversity of Canada's population has helped shape our laws, institutions and traditions, and is a continued source of strength.
Today we mark Canadian Multiculturalism Day—a celebration of the many multicultural groups and communities that strengthen and enrich our social fabric. It is an opportunity to reflect on our past, including the many waves of immigrants that have made Canada their home, and to celebrate the rich diversity of our society.
As the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy, Canada has greatly benefited from the contributions that new Canadians and their descendants have made to our country. More than 45 years later, Canadians continue to demonstrate this spirit of openness and inclusion that is central to who we are.
This year's events are especially exciting as we celebrate Canada 150. Throughout the year, Canadians of all ages and backgrounds will have the opportunity to come together in celebration of what makes our communities unique, diverse and vibrant. Our Government is proud to support Canadian Multiculturalism Day events all across the country, including major celebrations in Montréal, Vancouver and Toronto.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I invite all Canadians to take part in these events and discover the many cultures and communities that have helped make Canada a great place to live.
