Today, we celebrate Imamat Day / Khushiali
OTTAWA, July 11, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, Ismaili Muslims in Canada and around the world celebrate Imamat Day, marking the day in 1957 when His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV became Imam and spiritual leader of the Shi'a Ismaili Muslims. Today also signals the conclusion of the year-long festivities around the globe for His Highness's Diamond Jubilee.
For over 60 years, the Aga Khan has dedicated his life to community service. From improving the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable people to promoting peace and pluralism, the impact of his humanitarian work is felt the world over. We are proud that the Aga Khan is an honorary Canadian citizen, and chose Canada to host the Global Centre for Pluralism in Ottawa as well as the Aga Khan Museum and the Ismaili Centre in Toronto.
Imamat Day also presents an excellent opportunity to highlight the Ismaili community's contribution to all spheres of Canadian society. With about 100,000 Ismaili Muslims in Canada, it is a wonderful illustration of the diversity that makes our country strong and proud.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to all Ismaili Muslims across Canada for Imamat Day. Khushiali mubarak!
