OTTAWA, May 27, 2017 /CNW/ - Today is the first day of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting and prayer observed by Muslims across Canada and around the world. This month marks the revealing of the Qu'ran to Prophet Muhammad, and is a time for introspection, giving to the poor, and spending time with friends and family.
Over the next month, those celebrating Ramadan will fast from sunrise to sunset, as a practice of self-discipline, closeness to God and empathy for those suffering, and then come together for a shared nightly meal known as iftar.
Let us take the time during Ramadan to recognize and show gratitude for the incredible contributions of Muslim Canadians, and how we all benefit from our country's diversity and spirit of openness.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to all those observing Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!
