Today, Sikhs in Canada and around the world celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of the Sikh religion
OTTAWA, Nov. 4, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, the Sikh community marks Gurparab, the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and one of the holiest days on the Sikh calendar.
Born in 1469, Guru Nanak is the founder of the Sikh religion. The first of the faith's 10 spiritual leaders, he devoted his life to promoting equality, altruism, tolerance and compassion. His teachings remain a source of inspiration for Sikhs around the world.
Canada is proud to be home to one of the largest Sikh communities outside India. As we celebrate Canada 150 and our rich diversity, the birthday of Guru Nanak is an excellent opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the enormous contribution that Sikh Canadians have made to our society.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I wish a joyous festival to all those celebrating this anniversary.
