OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2018 /CNW/ - The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women, today issued the following statement:
"As we celebrate Women's History Month, including International Day of the Girl on October 11 and Persons Day on October 18, let's take the opportunity to recognize the women and girls in Canada who have made, and continue to make, a lasting impact on our country's history with this year's theme, #MakeAnImpact.
"Whether they are reaching for success in fields as diverse as STEM, the arts and politics, or paving the way for others as trailblazers and human rights defenders, all of these women have something in common: courage. Courage to make change, to tear down barriers, and ultimately, to improve the lives of all Canadians. Some of them are well known while others have yet to be recognized, but each and every one has helped to shape Canada into a thriving, diverse and prosperous country.
"And while their stories are unique, they share a collective commitment to advancing gender equality, and to demonstrating that it isn't just the right thing to do, it's the smart thing to do. Our government shares that commitment and will continue to bring in policies of fairness and equality because we know that if we do, we will add $150 billion dollars to our economy in less than a decade, strengthening the middle class and increasing economic prosperity for all Canadians.
"This month, join in celebrating the courageous women and girls from our past, and our present, whose bravery and perseverance move us closer to gender equality across Canada. Share the story of a woman of impact in your community using the hashtag #MakeAnImpact and visit women.gc.ca to view the Women of Impact in Canada gallery.
"Happy Women's History Month!"
