This week, millions of people in Canada and around the world celebrate Vaisakhi
OTTAWA, April 14, 2019 /CNW/ - Today, we join the Sikh community in Canada and around the world to celebrate Vaisakhi, the holiest day in the Sikh calendar.
Vaisakhi marks the founding of the Khalsa, the community of baptized Sikhs, by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. During this holiday, families and friends gather to participate in Nagar Kirtan celebrations and attend prayers at gurdwaras.
Canada is proud to be home to one of the largest Sikh populations in the world. Vaisakhi is an opportunity to recognize the immense contributions of the Sikh community in Canada in building a welcoming, diverse, inclusive and prosperous country we live in today. Bill C-376, an Act to designate the month of April as Sikh Heritage Month, was recently adopted by the House of Commons and the Senate. I invite all Canadians to learn more about the depth and richness of Sikh culture and traditions.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, I would like to extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating Vaisakhi.
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
