Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on the Announcement of the Renewal of a Suncor Energy's Support for the Canadian Olympic Committee

CALGARY, Feb. 22, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Suncor Energy on renewing its commitment to the Olympic movement and demonstrating the kind of leadership that will help Canada continue to achieve podium success.

As the single largest contributor to sport in this country, our Government recognizes that the Olympic Games provide Canada with the opportunity to promote Canadian culture and athleticism, while sharing its values of openness, equality and respect for human rights.

Support from the private sector, like that announced today, will play a key role in ensuring that Canada maintains its status as a leading sport nation on the international stage.

I would also like to thank the Canadian Olympic Committee for their ongoing dedication to promoting Olympic ideals and excellence.

As Minister of State (Sport), I wish all our athletes the best of luck as they continue their pursuit for excellence on the path to the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
