Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Death of Stompin' Tom Connors

OTTAWA, March 7, 2013 /CNW/ - It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Stompin' Tom Connors.

Best known as the Canadian folk-singer who moved the entire country to the tune of The Hockey Song, Mr. Connors was also the patriot who entertained our nation for four decades with his musical talent and kind spirit.

Born in 1936 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Charles Thomas Connors began his musical career on the road travelling in Canada. Known for always wearing a black cowboy hat and pounding the floor with his left foot during performances, Stompin' Tom wrote hundreds of songs during his career, most of them inspired by the beauty, character, and spirit of our country.

In 1996, Mr. Connors was invested into the Order of Canada in recognition of his staunch support of Canada, its music and musicians. He will be remembered for his constant support of Canadian talent and concern for the preservation of our cultural heritage.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I offer my sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Stompin' Tom.
