Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of Canadian Music Week 2013 Français
OTTAWA, March 19, 2013 /CNW/ - Canadian Music Week begins today and runs until March 24. It provides a great opportunity to demonstrate the depth of Canadian talent to the world and to highlight the achievements and dedication of Canadian musicians. Thanks to our talent and creativity, Canada is the world's third largest exporter of musical talent.
Canada is home to more than 30,000 composers and songwriters. Our music industry creates jobs, generates economic growth across the country, and enriches our lives. Our Government recognizes the importance of the music industry in Canada, and we are pleased to support our artists who help showcase our culture at home and abroad through programs like the Canada Music Fund.
Delegates from the sound recording, digital media, and broadcast industries are gathering in Toronto for one week of events including conferences, festivals, live performances, and awards ceremonies. Toronto will be in the spotlight as more than 60 live music venues in the city's downtown area will showcase over 1,000 artists.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to thank the organizers of Canadian Music Week and all those who have contributed to its success.
