Statement by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize

OTTAWA, Nov. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - The success of Canadian books is a result of the dedication of our gifted writers, the skill and commitment of our publishers, and readers who are passionate about our stories, ideas and values.

The Scotiabank Giller Prize is one of Canada's most esteemed literary awards, presented every year to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English. I am pleased to congratulate Lynn Coady, winner of the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her book Hellgoing.

Canada's book industry creates jobs, generates economic growth in Canadian communities and enriches our lives. Book publishers in Canada generate over $2 billion in revenue every year and directly employ around 9,000 people. Our Government is proud to support this sector by providing over $36 million in annual funding to Canadian-owned book publishers and industry organizations through the Canada Book Fund.

On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I would like to commend Lynn Coady on this significant accomplishment. I also applaud all talented Canadian writers, including Alice Munro who won this year's Nobel Prize in Literature. Canadian artists distinguish themselves not only at home but also internationally through the quality of their works and the extent of their commitment to arts and culture.
